Homeowner’s insurance is a strikingly complicated process. While I don’t want to get into the weeds too much, it’s important to first note that RPS is not a homeowner’s insurance company. However we do have experience with warranties, and with customer’s doing what they can to ensure they’re not missing out on extra money. If you have a homeowner’s insurance policy and you’re looking to replace or service a well pump, how can you tell if you’re potentially covered?
One thing to first look for is a covered peril clause. Was your well pump damaged by wind, fire or lightning? If so, you may be in luck (or you may have at least found a silver lining). Household appliances including well pumps are often included under a covered peril clause, but again this is a case-by-case basis, so we highly recommend calling up your specific provider and chatting through your situation with them.
If your pump wasn’t damaged by weather, then the odds of coverage become much lower. If you’re just looking to service based on pump lifespan, it’s a better idea to work directly with the installation company or manufacturer of the pump. Other options to look into for your pump include home warranties. So to recap; homeowner’s insurance does not normally cover pump replacement or servicing. If it does, it’s probably due to weather anomalies that would also have ended up damaging a significant portion of your home. You’ll need to check your specific policy for a weather peril clause. Besides that, home warranties are a possibility to receive reduced pricing, but monthly payments will be higher. As a general rule, ensuring your pump has a service warranty will be the best way to save money.
